The MTL5546 supports HART communication. This allows you to send and receive digital signals over the 4-20mA loop. As a result, device configuration and diagnostics become straightforward.
Input voltage stays <6.0V with field wiring intact. When wiring opens or shorts, input current drops below 0.9mA. This feature enables remote fault detection.
Maximum current consumption equals 35mA at 24V dc. This occurs with 20mA signals into a 250Ω load. Power dissipation inside the unit reaches 0.8W at 24V.

First, mount the MTL5546 on a 35mm DIN rail. Ensure the rail is grounded properly. Next, connect the safe-area controller to terminals 11 and 12. Use crimp ferrules for secure wiring.
Then, wire the hazardous area load to terminals 1 and 2. Verify the load resistance stays between 90Ω and 800Ω. Connect the power supply to terminals 13 and 14. The supply voltage must be 20-35V DC.
For HART communication, ensure no extra capacitance shunts the output. Keep field wiring away from high-voltage cables. Finally, test the line fault detection by creating a temporary open circuit. The input current should drop below 0.9mA.

1. Can the MTL5546 drive a load lower than 90Ω?
No, the minimum load is 90Ω. Below 50Ω, the unit detects a short circuit. The input current will then drop to the preset fault level.
2. Does the Eaton MTL5546 work with Foundation Fieldbus devices?
No, this module supports only HART communication. For Fieldbus, please consider other MTL models.
3. What happens if the 4-20mA signal exceeds 24mA?
Over range capability stops at 24mA, but only for loads ≤520Ω. Higher currents may damage the output stage. Always keep the signal within specifications.
4. How do I reset line fault detection after repairing wiring?
The unit resets automatically. Once the open or short circuit is fixed, normal current returns. No manual reset is needed.
5. Is the green LED sufficient to confirm proper operation?
The green LED only shows power is present. It does not verify signal integrity. Use a handheld communicator to check HART communication.
