Honeywell TC-PIA081 Analog Current Input Module (8 Points) – Withdrawn, Replaced by TC-PIA082

Product Introduction

The Honeywell TC-PIA081 provides eight single-ended analog input channels. All channels share a single common reference. This module accepts signals from both 2-wire and 3-wire transmitters. The standard input range is 4 to 20mA, with an extended range from 2 to 22mA.

Honeywell TC-PIA081 delivers high accuracy at 0.1% of the signal range. Temperature drift is only 50 ppm/°C. Response time reaches 99% of the final value within 4ms. Resolution is 16 bits, ensuring precise measurements for critical processes.

Please note that this module is withdrawn from sale. The manufacturer has replaced it with TC-PIA082. Existing stocks may still be available. However, we recommend checking the newer model for long-term support.

Intrinsically Safe Specifications

The Honeywell TC-PIA081 carries CENELEC classification II (1) 2G EEx ia/ib IIB/IIC T4. For 2-wire inputs, the permissible field circuit values are Uo = 23.7V, Io = 92.5mA, and Po = 548mW. For 3-wire inputs, these values are Uo = 23.7V, Io = 93.5mA, and Po = 555mW.

Maximum external inductance (Lo) depends on the gas group. For IIB applications, Lo reaches 10mH. For IIC applications, Lo is limited to 2.5mH. Similarly, maximum external capacitance (Co) is 560nF for IIB and 66nF for IIC. Always respect these limits to maintain intrinsic safety.

Filtering and Alarm Features

This module includes configurable filter cutoff frequencies. You can set filters for channel groups 0 to 3 and 4 to 7. Available cutoff frequencies are 0.5, 1, 2, 4, and 10 Hz. Common mode rejection ratio reaches 120dB at 50 to 60Hz.

Additionally, the Honeywell TC-PIA081 provides several alarms. Lead breakage detection triggers an alarm through the backplane bus. The channel LED flashes red to indicate a fault. You can configure lead breakage indication to be off for all channels if needed.

Other configurable alarms include overrange per channel, underrange per channel, transmitter alarm for defined fault current, and transmitter lead breakage alarm. The latter works only if your transmitter supports fault indication.

Mechanical and Environmental Parameters

The Honeywell TC-PIA081 operates in ambient temperatures from -20°C to 70°C (-4°F to 158°F). Storage temperature ranges from -20°C up to 100°C (-4°F to 212°F). Maximum relative humidity is 95%, non-condensing.

Furthermore, it passes the pollution gas test at level G3 per ISA-S71.04-1985. Shock testing reaches 15g peak for 11ms. Vibration testing follows IEC 68-2-6 at 2g from 10Hz to 500Hz. Protection class is IP20. For field installation, you must place it inside a housing with at least IP54 protection.

Weight is 0.203 kg (0.45 lb). Dimensions are 76 x 94 x 46 mm (3.0 x 3.7 x 1.8 inches). The keyswitch position is 3.

Power and Consumption

Intrinsically safe power comes through the terminal base. The Honeywell TC-PIA081 consumes 0.95 power supply unit load. Power dissipation is 5.2W. Use the correct terminal base model to supply the required intrinsically safe power.

Installation Guidelines

Installing the Honeywell TC-PIA081 requires attention to wiring practices. First, mount the compatible terminal base on a DIN rail. Next, set the keyswitch position to 3. Then, insert the module into the base.

For wiring, use shielded multicore cable with a shield for each channel. Each channel's isolation must exceed 500V to achieve EMC protection class. Connect your 2-wire or 3-wire transmitters according to the terminal assignments above.

Finally, configure the filter cutoffs and alarms through your ControlNet system. Remember that this module is withdrawn. Plan for eventual migration to TC-PIA082.

Compliance and Certifications

This module meets DIN EN 50014:1992, DIN EN 50020:1994, and DIN EN 50284:1997. Climatic conditions follow DIN IEC 721. EMC compatibility adheres to DIN EN 50081-2, DIN EN 50082-2, and NAMUR NE 21.

The Honeywell TC-PIA081 carries CENELEC classification II (1) 2G EEx ia/ib IIB/IIC T4. Agency certification includes DMT 99 ATEX E 031 X. It is marked for all applicable directives.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

1. Is the TC-PIA081 still available for purchase?
This module is withdrawn from sale and replaced by TC-PIA082. We offer remaining stock only. For new projects, please order the TC-PIA082 instead. Technical support may be limited for withdrawn products.

2. Can I mix 2-wire and 3-wire transmitters on the same TC-PIA081?
Yes, you can mix them across different channels. However, each channel must be wired correctly for its transmitter type. Follow the terminal assignments carefully. There is no isolation between channels.

3. What happens during a lead breakage on a channel?
The module detects lead breakage when current drops below 2mA. It then sends an alarm through the backplane bus. The corresponding channel LED flashes red. You can disable this indication if needed.

4. How do I calculate the maximum cable length for my IIC application?
Use the Lo and Co limits for IIC: 2.5mH and 66nF. Calculate your cable's inductance and capacitance per meter. Divide the limits by these values to find maximum length. Keep total connected L and C below the specified limits.

5. Why does the TC-PIA081 have no isolation between input channels?
This design reduces cost and complexity for single-ended applications. However, it means all inputs share a common reference. Use external isolators if you need channel-to-channel isolation. The newer TC-PIA082 may offer different isolation characteristics.
