The FBM216 connects HART field instruments directly to Foxboro control systems. It handles both analog current signals and digital HART communication. Each channel includes an isolated 24 V DC loop supply. The output impedance is 20 Ω including the termination assembly. For internally powered loops, total input resistance is 302 Ω. For externally powered loops, it measures 282 Ω. The internal loop supply compliance voltage at the termination assembly is 18.5 V DC minimum at 20.5 mA.
Current input uses a sense resistor of 280 Ω with ±0.02% tolerance. Total input resistance including redundancy adapter is 280 Ω nominal. Temperature coefficient is 50 PPM/°C, ensuring stable readings across temperature changes.
Each channel is individually galvanically isolated, current limited, and voltage regulated. All field connections are limited to less than 37 mA with a single FBM216 installed. When redundant modules are installed, the limit becomes 72 mA.
The module's isolation withstands a common mode potential of 600 V AC applied for one minute. This applies between isolated input circuits and earth ground. It also applies between any given channel and any other channel. Therefore, the FBM216 provides excellent protection against ground loops and surges.
Power input accepts 24 V dc with +5% and -10% tolerance. Maximum consumption is 7 W, while heat dissipation is only 4 W maximum. This makes the FBM216 efficient for continuous operation.
For operating conditions, the module and termination assembly both handle -20°C to +70°C (-4°F to +158°F). Relative humidity ranges from 5% to 95% non-condensing. Altitude tolerance is -300 to +3,000 meters (-1,000 to +10,000 feet). Storage temperature extends from -40°C to +70°C (-40°F to +158°F).
The FBM216 is suitable for Class G3 harsh environments as defined in ISA Standard S71.04. Vibration tolerance is 7.5 m/S² (0.75 g) from 5 to 500 Hz. This allows installation in industrial settings with moderate vibration.
Mount the FBM216 module in the appropriate Foxboro chassis. Connect the termination assembly according to HART FSK physical layer specifications. For point-to-point wiring, use shielded twisted-pair cables. Keep cable lengths within the 3030-meter limit for reliable communication.
