Keyence IV4-400MA AI Vision Sensor
Product Introduction
The Keyence IV4-400MA is a narrow field of view smart camera from the IV4 Series. This monochrome model embeds AI processing inside the camera body. Consequently, it performs inspections without an external vision controller. The unit fits presence checks, sorting, and counting applications on automated lines.
Technical Specifications
Imaging Performance
The IV4-400MA uses a 1/2.9 inch monochrome CMOS sensor with 1280 x 960 pixels. Its narrow field of view begins at an installation distance of 400 mm. Specifically, the view covers 58 x 44 mm at 400 mm and reaches 464 x 348 mm at 3000 mm. Focus adjustment is automatic, which speeds up product changeovers.
Exposure and Illumination
Exposure time spans 12 µs to 10 ms, enabling capture of fast-moving parts. A built-in infrared LED provides illumination. Furthermore, the lighting method uses pulse operation only. This design freezes motion cleanly and avoids ambient light interference in most cells.
Tools and Modes
The camera includes 65 tools for flexible inspection setup. Operators select Standard Mode, Sorting Mode, or AI Through Count Mode. In addition, the AI engine learns acceptable part variation, which lowers false rejections on complex surfaces.
Communication and Electrical Parameters
Built-in Ports and Protocols
An M12 8-pin X-code female Ethernet connector supports 1000BASE-T and 100BASE-TX transfer. The IV4-400MA handles EtherNet/IP, PROFINET CC-B, and TCP/IP non-procedural communication. Moreover, it offers FTP client, SFTP client, SNTP client, OPC UA server, and MQTT client functions.
Communication Expansion
The IV4-CU1 communication unit adds PROFINET CC-C and EtherCAT support. Besides, DL Series units enable EtherCAT, CC-Link, DeviceNet, and RS-232C links. As a result, the camera connects to most factory control platforms.
Power and I/O
The unit operates on 24 VDC +25%/-20% including ripple. Current draw is 3.4 A or less at 19.2 V, and 2.7 A or less at 24.0 V. Average consumption reaches 9.3 W without the AI imaging illumination unit and 12.8 W with it. PoE Power Class 4/6 is supported as well.
The IV4-400MA provides six inputs and six outputs, with three selectable IN/OUT lines. Outputs use open collector design with NPN/PNP and N.O./N.C. switching. Maximum output rating is 30 V at 50 mA.
Mechanical and Environmental Parameters
Protection and Durability
The housing carries an IP67 rating, except when polarizing filters OP-88640, OP-88641, OP-88644, or OP-88645 are installed. Vibration resistance covers 10 to 500 Hz at 0.816 G²/Hz across X, Y, and Z axes. Shock resistance reaches 500 m/s², tested three times in each of six directions.
Operating Conditions
Operating temperature ranges from 0 to +50 °C with no freezing allowed. Relative humidity must remain at 85% RH or less without condensation. These limits match typical machine vision installations inside production cells.
Physical Construction
The main case uses aluminum die-casting for rigidity. The front cover is hard-coated acrylic, while the back cover and lid use PBT. The design is ESD safe and complies with IEC61340-5-1. Weight is approximately 370 g without the AI imaging illumination unit, or 560 g with it.
Installation Guide
Mounting and Distance
First, mount the IV4-400MA at least 400 mm from the target. The narrow field of view suits small-part inspection where detail matters. Next, confirm the field of view against the working distance using the reference values. Adjust the camera angle until the target fills the frame correctly.
Wiring and Network Setup
Connect the M12 X-code Ethernet cable to the camera and the network switch. For PoE operation, verify the switch supplies Power Class 4/6. Otherwise, wire the 24 VDC supply and I/O lines to the terminal. Finally, assign an IP address and select the protocol matching the PLC.
Lighting and Filter Configuration
Pulse lighting freezes moving parts effectively, so match the exposure to line speed. If reflections cause instability, install a compatible polarizing filter. Note that filter installation voids the IP67 rating. Therefore, add extra shielding in wet or dusty areas.

FAQ
Q1: What field of view does the IV4-400MA provide?
A: At 400 mm it covers 58 x 44 mm. At 3000 mm it expands to 464 x 348 mm as a reference value.
Q2: How does the monochrome model differ from the color version?
A: The IV4-400MA uses a monochrome CMOS sensor and infrared LED lighting, while the color model uses white LED illumination.
Q3: Which fieldbus protocols are supported?
A: EtherNet/IP, PROFINET CC-B, OPC UA, and MQTT work natively. The IV4-CU1 unit adds PROFINET CC-C and EtherCAT.
Q4: Does the IP67 rating apply with polarizing filters?
A: No. The IP67 rating does not apply when OP-88640, OP-88641, OP-88644, or OP-88645 filters are installed.
Q5: How do I ship this product?
A: We ship worldwide via Fedex, UPS, and DHL. Delivery times vary by destination.
